Last week saw the arrival of long awaited sunshine and the return of socially distanced park beers. After a long, lonely and often difficult winter it feels like the mood has shifted and suddenly people have begun to dare to hope for better days. Among these bubbling feelings of optimism John Myrtle, a favourite of ours here at RC has released a new groovy track and it accompanies the atmosphere perfectly.
Last month saw the release of Myrtle’s ‘Get Her Off My Mind’ a love-sick track capturing the sweeping emotions of early romance. This single accompanies it perfectly, continuing to explore the conflicting but familiar feelings of hope and fear that come with the intense question of love. ‘How Can You Tell If You Love Her’ explores the unpredictable and anxiety inducing experiences that come with romantic vulnerability.
This track was inspired by Mytle’s breakup with a long term partner and confusion in the pursuit of another relationship. “I remember feeling like everyone I had known always seemed to doubt love in some way, and I wrote the lyrics to this song with that in mind. I was unsure of what the future held for me, and I felt like singing this song was quite cathartic, at least it screamed out that I wanted certainty in my life and answers!”
When it comes to love, Myrtle reflects “you can never really be certain you’re doing the right thing, you’ve just got to trust yourself. It’s not like you can get a tape measure or complete a questionnaire to tell you if what you’re doing is right. This was the first song I had written since I had moved to London. I remember feeling quite alone when writing it, and just really unsure about all the decisions I had made up until that point.”
Myrtle’s mastery is the way he wraps difficult and emotional topics in sugar-sweet melodies. This latest single comes with the announcement of his upcoming album Myrtle Soup, due on 18th June this year. If the first two tracks are anything to go by it’ll be an album that perfectly accompanies the summer and whatever that may bring; be it sunny days or heartache.
